Christmas Lights Turning on Across Northern Ireland

The turning on of Christmas lights can be a magical experience for all the family. In towns and cities across Northern Ireland, many will be gathering to witness Christmas trees and streets lighting up and to mark the countdown to Christmas. Find below a town or city near you to watch the turning on of Christmas lights.

1. Belfast Christmas Lights Switch-On

Saturday 18th November, 6.30pm – 7.30pm

Families and individuals will be gathering at City Hall in a few weeks’ time to mark the beginning of the festive season at the annual Christmas lights switch on in Belfast. The Lord Mayor, Councillor Nuala McAllister, will be joined by the Cool FM Breakfast crew, Bing and Flop, The Twirlywoos, Milkshake Live's Derek and Jen and Cavehill Primary School choir. It looks set to be a fun-filled evening. Beyond the turning of Christmas lights there are also the Christmas markets to enjoy at City Hall right up until Christmas Eve.

2. Derry – Londonderry City Christmas Lights Switch-On

Thursday 23rd November, 6pm-8pm

Derry lights

Derry City will be pulling all the stops at its city centre Christmas lights switch on at Guildhall Square. The evening will feature street characters, live festive music by Sensation in Guildhall Square and Superstition in Waterloo Place, and real reindeers in the Peace Garden (5pm - 8 pm).

There will also be Christmas lights switching on in nearby Strabane and Castlederg for those not able to make it to Derry City.

3. Holywood Christmas Lights Switch-On

Friday 25th November, 4.30pm

Ards and North Down Borough Council will be hosting the area’s annual Christmas lights switch-on in Holywood. Holywood District Community council will be hosting a variety of themed activities to keep everyone entertained throughout the day. There is also a strong possibility that Santa will make an appearance at some point!

4. Enniskillen Christmas Lights Switch-On

Saturday 26th November, 3.30-5.30pm

Enniskillen will be filled with festive excitement as The Diamond area fills with entertainment such as street entertainers, face painters, balloon modellers, music and, of course, an appearance from Santa.

5. Ballymena Christmas Lights Switch-On

Friday 10th November, 6.30pm

Mid and East Antrim Council is planning a turning of Christmas lights event at the Braid’s Centre in Ballymena. The event will not only involve the switching on of lights but also lots of additional entertainment such as face painting, balloon modelling, walk about characters and live music. 

A performance by Ballymena Chamber Orchestra and a screening of It’s a Wonderful Life will also be happening at the Braid’s Centre on Tuesday 12th December.
