Practical Ways to Support the Elderly

During this time, it’s particularly important that we keep the vulnerable and those who need help most in our minds. This includes our elderly neighbours and loved ones who will not be able to leave their house during this period. Even though we must keep our distance, there are still some practical things we can do to show that we care.

Practical Ways to Help the Elderly

Although we cannot catch up with our elderly loved ones face to face, they are only a phone call or a video call away. Make sure to check in with an elderly friend, relative or neighbour to see how they’re feeling and show them that you’re thinking of them. This can be a very lonely time for people who live on their own which is why it is more important than ever to reach out and be kind. If it’s a relative, take it in turns each day between family members so that they hear from everybody.

Help with shopping

As it is vital for the elderly to stay indoors during the current circumstances, if you are feeling well and are able to do your own shopping then why not pick up a few essentials for your elderly relatives and neighbours while you’re there. Make sure to leave the groceries on the front doorstep to avoid any contact and knock the door to ensure they get them safely.

Lift their prescription for them

If you’re still able to visit the pharmacy, check in with your relatives or elderly neighbours to see if they need a prescription collected. This may need prearranged over the phone with the chemist but it saves any worry on their part about getting essential medication.

Send positivity

Making cards with kids

Relatives will no doubt be missing the smiling faces of their grandchildren at the moment and vice versa! Keep the kids busy by making cards or letters to post to their grandparents which is sure to bring some joy to their day. Make this a weekly task which will keep the relative looking forward to the next card or letter.

Prepare a meal

Preparing a meal for someone is a great way to show that you are thinking about them. A one pot dish that is easy to heat up and filled with vegetables like stew, curry or soup is ideal. Just like groceries, drop this off on their doorstep so they receive it safely. Take a look at our make ahead recipes for more inspiration.

You can download a postcard here to send to your elderly neighbours and relatives to ensure they know someone is looking out for them during this time.
