5 Great NI Staycations to Recharge the Batteries

Electric Ireland - NI StaycationSummer can be a great time to recharge the batteries, with the longer summer evenings providing plenty of opportunity to get out into the garden and relax and unwind. We are fortunate here in Northern Ireland in that most destinations are easily accessible and can be reached in a couple of hours and, in some cases, only a few minutes!

With the summer holidays starting to get into the home straight, and with the August Bank Holiday coming up on the horizon, here are five staycations to consider for a weekend break in Northern Ireland, destined to get you refreshed for the cooler months that are ahead.

5 Northern Ireland Staycation Destinations to Consider

1) Enniskillen

EnniskillenWhen it comes to peace and tranquillity, look no further than Enniskillen and the wonderful Fermanagh Lakelands. From 5-star hotels and friendly B&B’s to glamping and bubble pods, Enniskillen has ample accommodation options to consider, offering everything from a relaxing retreat to an activity packed family breaks.

With tours of the lakes and the newly refurbished Enniskillen Castle to explore, a trip to Enniskillen is perfect to take you away from the hustle and bustle of city life. What’s more, Enniskillen has you well placed to explore some of Fermanagh’s most popular attractions including Boa Island, Crom Estate, Marble Arch Caves and Florence Court.

If walking is your thing, then check out the Cuilcagh Mountains which have several walking trails to be explored. Find out more here.

2) Newcastle

From the Lakelands to the seaside, our next recommendation for an NI staycation is Newcastle. With the world’s best golf course on its doorstep, and Northern Ireland’s highest peak (Slieve Donard) to explore, Newcastle is a town that attracts thousands of visitors across the summer months.

With several accommodation options to consider, and something for all the family, Newcastle is perfect for a short-break. The town also boasts several popular pubs and several award-winning restaurants to ensure you can truly relax and unwind when visiting the coast.

Newcastle also has you well placed to visit the neighbouring town of Castlewellan and the stunning Castlewellan Forest Park, where you can explore the Peace Maze with the family, or rent a bike and try out the mountain bike trails. The area is also home to Tollymore Forest Park, and only a short drive to Kilbroney Park in Rostrevor.

3) Armagh City

Armagh

Take a cultural trip to the Cathedral City of Armagh and enjoy a staycation of discovery by visiting one of Ireland’s most famous ancient sites, Navan Fort. Marvel at some of the exhibitions and shows on display at Navan Fort, and find out more about the history of the land, Ulster, and indeed Northern Ireland.

No trip to Armagh would be complete without visiting the two St Patrick’s Cathedrals in the city, while a walk around the city itself will introduce you to some amazing Georgian architecture, providing plenty of great photo opportunities. The Armagh Public Library, Armagh Observatory and Archbishop’s Palace are also among Armagh’s must-see attractions.

With the Armagh Planetarium situated in the city and the stunning Oxford Island Nature Reserve and Lough Neagh Discovery Centre a short drive away, a trip to Armagh City really is one of discovery, and the perfect way to spend a few days with the kids before they return to school.

4) Portstewart

Fresh from hosting the 2017 Irish Open, the seaside town of Portstewart provides a huge amount of variety when it comes to an NI staycation, positioning you in a great spot to set off and explore the stunning Causeway Coast.

Golf fans can relax and tee off at Portstewart Golf Club or play a game of pitch and putt at the Old Golf Course across town.

If you’re planning a few days away with the kids, expect to spend lots of time in the iconic Barry’s Amusement Park in nearby Portrush, or the Jet Centre in Coleraine with its cinema, crazy golf and soft play area.

Portstewart is located on one of the finest stretches of coastline in Northern Ireland, providing lots of opportunity to soak up the sea air along its popular Strand or Cliff Walk. If the weather is good there is also the option of swimming or trying one of many great water sports such as surfing, kayaking or paddle boarding.

5) Londonderry City

There are few places in Northern Ireland that can rival Derry City when it comes to a short break; the stunning walled city providing a great staycation option whether you are travelling solo, as a couple, or with friends and family.

Enjoy a walk around the city walls and enjoy some of the most popular sites that the city has to offer, such as the Peace Bridge, The Guildhall, the Tower Museum and the Siege Museum. St Columb’s Cathedral in the city is also one to add to your list, whilst the popular craft village is a jewel in the city’s crown and not to be missed.

When visiting Derry for a short-break be sure to take the opportunity to visit some of the famous sites around the county, with Mussenden Temple and Ness Country Park providing some respite from the busy city streets.
