6 Garden Safety Tips

With the dry weather holding up in Northern Ireland, it’s the perfect time to get outdoors in your garden, whether you get the chance to do a spot of gardening or catch a few rays! Here are our tips for staying safe in the garden no matter what you’re getting up to.

Staying Safe in the Garden this Summer

1. Stay hydrated

Garden Safety Tip - Stay Hydrated

Forgetting to keep your water intake up on a warm day outside can lead to dehydration and cause you to feel sick. It’s a good idea to have water or some other fluids like juice on hand if you’re spending long hours outdoors and ensure your kids are well hydrated before spending the day outside too.

Top Tip: A refillable water bottle with markers on it will help you stay on track for drinking enough fluids throughout the day.

2. Wear SPF

Your back garden in Northern Ireland may not be the same as lying by the pool in a hot country this summer however, SPF is still an essential for you and your kids! You might think the sun here in Northern Ireland is not as strong however, when you’re distracted by playing in the garden or doing some planting, you might not feel your skin burning and it still can cause skin damage in the long run. You may also want to invest in a hat especially for your children, if they are outside for long periods of time.

3. Keep your kids safe

Playing outdoors should be fun for everyone, especially your kids. Create a safe environment for them by making sure to hide any garden tools or sharp objects. If you have any ponds in your garden or have filled the paddling pool, always keep a close eye on your kids while playing.

4. Use electrical items safely

Garden Safety Tips

Whether you’re trimming your hedges or mowing the lawn, make sure to be careful when using electrical items in the garden. Ensure that any cables are suitable for outdoors, keep them dry and in a safe place to avoid anyone tripping over them. If you are using a hedge trimmer make sure to wear safety goggles and hearing protection for your own safety.

5. Wear gloves when gardening

Your garden may be full of unwanted creatures and germs so to avoid touching any surprises, make sure to wear garden gloves when planting or pulling weeds as this will help protect you from blisters, fertilisers, pesticides, bacteria, fungi and sharp tools. When you’re finished in the garden, always make sure to wash your hands even if you have been wearing gloves to avoid bringing any germs indoors.

6. Keep your pet safe

If you have a dog running about your garden, you might want to consider trying organic ways to get rid of pests like slugs and snails instead of using harmful chemicals as this could cause serious harm to them. You should also avoid adding additives to ponds in case your pet attempts to drink from them.

Top Tip: A homemade garlic wash can be used to spray on your garden to deter slugs and snails.
