5 Great Christmas Decorations to Make with your Family

1. Homemade Glitter Lanterns

Add some sparkle to your home with these easy to make glitter lanterns from the guys at Hallmark Channel. Simply grab some old, empty glass jars - or a vase, and get some glitter and glue. Apply the glue to the jar and pour in the glitter, cover the top and shake around until it sticks. Let the glitter set before adding a candle or some battery lighting and decorate with a Christmas bow. Simple to make and something fun to do with the kids! Follow Hallmark’s step by step guide.

2. Spare Little Tree

The Lovely Drawer blog has shared one of her easy, DIY Christmas decorations which is the perfect piece to fill that empty looking corner of the room! All you need is a sturdy tree branch, then apply white spray paint, set it in a small glass bottle or vase, and decorate with your favourite baubles!

3. Handmade Garland or Wreath

Create a centre piece for your living room this Christmas by making your own festive garland (well, sort of). Pick up a Christmas garland from a shop or the internet and put your own stamp on it by adding anything from Christmas lights and cards, to fake fruit and pinecones. Spray with fake snow or glitter for that added impact. This is a great way to get creative with your kids over the holiday and show off the results to guests.

4. Lollipop Stick Sleds

A fun decoration to make the kids, a sled (or sleigh) decoration can make a great addition to any Christmas tree. All you need is 6 – 8 lollipop sticks (you can buy these online from Amazon and eBay if you don’t fancy eating lots of lollipops), and some glue and paint or markers. Colour the sticks before using them, then glue together and leave to set. Once set, decorate for that added festive touch, before using some string and hanging from your tree or use as a tag for a Christmas gift – a great keepsake to use again and again.

5. Window Decorations

Window Decorations

Sometimes, it’s just a case of keeping it simple. Bring the outdoors into your home this Christmas by making your own festive snowflakes. Simply use an A4 Sheet and follow these steps to create your snowflake. Stick the paper between some heavy books to flatten them, before tying them together with a piece of string. Hang your snowflakes from your window, on the tree, or anywhere in the house you feel they will work. Get the kids involved in helping you pick the design!
