Darkness into Light
What started as a 400-strong sunrise walk in Dublin’s Phoenix Park in 2009 has since become a global movement, with over 200,000 people now rising early in solidarity for people impacted by suicide and self-harm.

This year in Northern Ireland, 16 organised walks will take place for Darkness into Light 2023, stretching from Downpatrick to Dromore, raising vital funds for the 14 local partner charities to help improve services and ultimately ensure that support is available for people who need help the most.
Darkness into Light is an event for everyone. A beacon of hope, a light against the dark. In Northern Ireland alone, the event has only grown with each year that passes, rising from nine walks in 2018 to the 16 organised walks planned for 2023.
Join Pieta, Electric Ireland and Northern Ireland partner charities for the most important sunrise of the year on Saturday 6th May, 2023. Every sign-up, every step, every sunrise shared makes a valuable contribution to raise vital funds to help provide life-saving services for those in suicidal distress and bereavement through suicide.

I am proud to be an ambassador for Darkness into Light 2023. It is a unique event that holds a special place in the hearts of many people not only across Northern Ireland but across the world. Locally the impact of Darkness into Light cannot be underestimated, the much-needed funds raised by everyone who takes part go directly towards helping support and bereavement services in the local communities that need it most. I will be there on Saturday 6 May and I hope you will sign up and join me for the most important sunrise of the year!
I initially trained as medical doctor and spent my career working in psychiatry and public health, before becoming a full-time artist. I am very aware of the impact mental illness can have, both on a professional and personal level. I am extremely proud to be an ambassador for Darkness into Light. I have created a bespoke oil painting for this year’s campaign, featuring Cave Hill at sunrise. Fundraise with me on the Darkness into Light iDonate page to be in with a chance of winning this original artwork.
I’m delighted to be involved in Darkness into Light this year as an ambassador and will be cycling through the night to help raise awareness of that all-important sunrise on 6th May. Let’s rise early together and walk, run, swim or cycle to help support the vital services provided by local suicide prevention and bereavement charities in communities across NI.
At Electric Ireland, we understand the importance of bringing light into Ireland’s homes and communities, which is why we are the proud sponsor of Pieta’s Darkness Into Light.
